About Life in the UK test

The Life in the UK test is for some applications for settlement (indefinite leave to remain) and British citizenship. You book it on GOV.UK at least three days ahead. The fee is £50, and there are test centres across the UK.

It is a computer test of 24 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, based only on the handbook Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents. You are told the result on the day. A pass needs 75% or more, which is 18 questions out of 24. A pass gives a unique reference number for the immigration application.

The questions are drawn from a large bank, so a later sitting is different. You may book again if you do not pass, and you pay again each time. At a centre in Wales the test can be taken in Welsh, and in Scotland in Scottish Gaelic.

You do not take the test if you are under 18 or 65 or over, if you have already passed it, or if you have a long-term physical or mental condition and the required evidence.
