About Leben in Deutschland

Leben in Deutschland is the civic-knowledge paper used at the end of the orientation course and, in the same shape, as the naturalisation test (Einbürgerungstest). It is sat on paper at a BAMF test centre. The published sample and the question catalogue are in German.

Each paper has 33 questions. Thirty of them come from the areas Living in a democracy, History and responsibility, and People and society. Three ask about the Land where the candidate lives. Every question has four answers and one of them is right. The time allowed is 60 minutes.

For naturalisation, and for using a Leben-in-Deutschland result as proof of civic knowledge, at least 17 of the 33 answers must be right. The orientation course itself treats 15 of 33 as a pass. A result under 17 can be sat again. The catalogue a candidate prepares from has 300 general questions and 10 for that candidate's Land. The full catalogue published by the BAMF has 300 general questions and 160 Land questions, ten for each of the 16 Länder.

The naturalisation-test ordinance, in force since 1 September 2008, says the 33-question papers are drawn from that catalogue, that each paper includes three questions on the Land where the candidate lives, and that those papers are not published. There are 100 such papers. This site's practice test is not one of them.

The test centre fee on the BAMF naturalisation page is 25 euro. On the day, candidates bring a valid photo identity document. A German school-leaving certificate, or an inability to take the test because of illness, disability or age, can remove the duty to sit it. The test is only one condition of naturalisation.
