About Canadian Citizenship Test
Most people who apply for Canadian citizenship and are 18 to 54 years old on the day they sign the application take a test of their knowledge of Canada. Applicants under 18 or 55 and over do not take it, and a person who has been granted a waiver does not take it either.
IRCC's study page describes one test, not two. It covers the rights and responsibilities of citizenship together with Canada's history, geography, economy, government, laws and symbols. Knowledge of Canada and those rights and responsibilities are not scored as separate papers, and the test does not mark English or French. Language is a separate requirement, noted at an interview if there is one.
The same page says the test has 20 questions, each multiple choice or true or false, in English or French, and lasts 45 minutes. You pass with at least 15 correct. You have three chances. For the online test, the invitation gives 30 days, the clock starts when you start and cannot be paused, and the test is submitted when 45 minutes are up.
Most applicants are invited to take it online, watched by webcam. Some sit it in person or on Microsoft Teams, including when an accommodation is needed. Questions are drawn from IRCC's study guide, Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. A new guide, written with Indigenous partners, was still described as unreleased in IRCC's 2026 deputy-minister transition binder.
