About Australian citizenship test
Most people applying for Australian citizenship by conferral sit a citizenship test. The Department of Home Affairs says it shows a basic knowledge of English, an understanding of what becoming a citizen means, an adequate knowledge of Australia and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, and an understanding of Australian values based on freedom, respect and equality. The Department's video says most applicants aged 18 to 59 need to take it. There is no extra charge: the application fee includes the test.
The test is 20 multiple-choice questions in English, on a computer, in 45 minutes. To pass, you need at least 15 out of 20 (75 per cent) and you need all five Australian values questions right. Questions are based on the testable section of Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond: Australia and its people; democratic beliefs, rights and liberties; government and the law; and Australian values. You can move between questions and change answers. Books, notes and phones are not allowed.
The same pass rule applies to the Assisted Test, which is 90 minutes. The legislative instrument allows that longer test for an applicant who has completed at least 400 hours of English tuition in the Adult Migrant English Program, or who has a physical or cognitive impairment that stops them sitting the standard test. A pass, once recorded, stays valid.
This practice form is one fixed set of 20 questions, with five of them on values. At a sitting, the computer draws 20 questions at random from the Department's bank, and five of those 20 are values questions.
